Bondi Icebergs Pool: Entry Fees, Hours & Visitor Guide

Bondi Icebergs Pool is the most famous ocean pool in Australia; an iconic 50-metre saltwater pool set into the rocks at the southern end of Bondi Beach, where the surf washes straight over the wall. A short drive or bus ride from Sydney’s city centre, it is one of the most photographed places in the country, and one of the rare world-famous pools that anyone can walk up to and swim in.

Can anyone swim here?

Yes. This is the question I get asked most, and the answer surprises people. Icebergs looks private, it sits under a members' club, and the photos make it feel like somewhere you need to know someone to get into. You don't. Walk up Notts Avenue, pay at the gate, and you're in.

The bit that does confuse people is the split. Your entry buys you the pool, the change rooms and the sauna. The gym, the bistro and the members' lounge belong to the club, and that is a separate thing entirely.

The pool itself

Fifty metres, Olympic length, nine lanes, with a separate 25-metre children's pool alongside. Plus a sauna and a cafe included with the entry.

Getting there and parking

Not much parking on site, but there's paid parking all along Bondi Beach — an easy five-minute walk away. Take the 333 bus from the city, or the train to Bondi Junction and a bus from there.

When the waves wash over the wall

The shot everyone knows, the one where the ocean pours over the far wall in a sheet of white, needs two things together: a high tide and real swell running.

How cold is it, and is it heated?

Not heated, the name should give that away. The pool is emptied and cleaned every week and refilled straight from the ocean, so it sits at whatever the sea is doing. That matters more than people expect, because the ocean runs about a season behind the air.

History

The grande dame of the Sydney ocean pool world, Bondi Icebergs is the most famous pool in Australia and the star of countless social media posts. In the early 1800s people swam in this spot in a natural rock pool that was then replaced by the original Bondi Baths in the late 1800s. After various upgrades over the years, today’s visitors can dive into the 50-metre adults pool or slip into the shallower 25-metre children’s pool between looking out at those unforgettable Bondi Beach views.

Since 1929 the pool has been home to the Bondi Icebergs, the only licensed Winter Swimming Club in the world. In 1985 the junior winter swimming club, the Bondi Icecubes, was formed for the sons of the Icebergs to enjoy. Then in 1995 the once all boys club finally allowed female members and their daughters to join them in the pool.

As strange as it may seem today, in the late 1990s the future of the Bondi Icebergs was in doubt until John Singleton and Andrew Griffith hatched a $10 million plan to redevelop the club. The project saved the heritage aspects of the site while adding the restaurant, change rooms, gymnasium and sauna that we have today.

You can see the pool for free from the level 1 balcony

You don't have to pay to get the better angle. During the day you can walk down to the balcony on level 1, just above the cafe, and across towards the start of the Bondi to Coogee walk. It's free and open to anyone, daytime only. That's where the elevated shot comes from, the one that puts the whole pool and the beach behind it in a single frame.

Worth knowing that the cafe itself is a different matter. You can't get into the Crabbe Hole without paying for pool entry, so if you were planning a coffee overlooking the water, budget for the $10.

Yes. There's no membership or booking — walk up Notts Avenue, pay at the gate, first come first served. Your entry covers the pool, change rooms and sauna; the gym and bistro belong to the club and are separate.

Yes. You can see the whole pool for free from the level 1 balcony, above the cafe towards the start of the Bondi to Coogee walk, open to anyone in the daytime. You just can't swim, or enter the cafe, without paying.

Can you go to the cafe without paying for the pool?

No. The Crabbe Hole cafe sits inside the pool area, so you need to pay pool entry ($10) to reach it.
